About Us
We
are the Hong Kong St. Andrew's Pipe Band, a group formed by many old
friends. After playing together in other groups and in other places we
all felt the need for an environment which was friendly, democratic and
placed music as its first priority. We are an enthusiastic and
innovative group. Our mission is to promote Scottish music in the
broadest sense. We play the traditional tunes but we also experiment
with other countries' music, and our own compositions, on the pipes and
drums. The Hong Kong St. Andrew's Pipe Band is a registered society
under the Hong Kong Societies Ordinance.
Our Musical Director, Mr Kieran Wan,
has a record of competitive and artistic success in bagpipe music and
was honoured as one of Hong Kong's Best Ten Young Artists by Hong Kong
Playground Association and Radio Television Hong Kong in 2007. Last
year, Mr Wan was one of the three judges at the piping competition,
held in Kobe, of the Japan
Pipefest 2008.
The other members of our committee are Mr Tim Hamlett, Mr Thomas Wong
and other senior members.
Members
of the band, who currently number 23, come from a wide range of
backgrounds, from students to retirees, but share the same enthusiasm
for Scottish music. Their musical experience also varies from
international medal winners to near-beginners. The band is happy to
meet new players of any level who share its passion and is prepared to
offer tuition to novices. The band meets weekly on Wednesday evenings.
In
Hong Kong the band has played at numerous occasions large and
small. Our range of activities includes piping, drumming, dancing
and drum majoring. We are constantly increasing our selection of music
and trying new ideas. Usually we play traditional Scottish tunes; but
we have also experimented with adapting other music, including tunes
from mainland China, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea and Taiwan, and the
results have been well received.
Promoting bagpipe music is
our goal. We are happy to play for all kinds of functions. In
2005, two members of the band were invited to China, where they
helped establish Mainland China's
first Scottish pipe band in Zhuhai, Guangdong.
Our
Band has been approved to wear items with the BrandHK (flying dragon)
logo which has been used to promote Hong Kong as Asia's world city.
We
are a non-profit-making organisation which charges fees only to cover
the running costs of the band. We charge nominal fees for charitable
organisations and a very reasonable rate for others.
We hope to see, and entertain, you soon.
